portuguese is like the weird brother of spanish, we brazilians hear/read a lot from gringos "gracias", "muy bien", "yo no hablo espanol", that's cool i feel like a polyglot
there is also italian, some words are similar to portuguese and spanish but it's a very different language, i almost can't understand shit
I know how you feel, I made the same mistake in the past, still feeling awful about it, learned never to assume like that again
