hm... they're both orphans, they met on the orphanage, mary ann was already there before zit was born, they got friends, mary ann is zit's best friend there, she consider mary ann her older sister. Fun fact: zit's name is "mary ann" too, Mariana Martha (mary ann martha), so they nickname her as "zit", "little ebony girl", "black girl", etc
