Rest in power, Torayama-san.

We should celebrate his life on his birthday. Let's forget the date of his death.

may he rest in peace.

It's really a shame my parents wouldn't let me watch Dragon Ball growing up, but once I was considered "old enough" for Toriyama-san's art in video games like Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest 8, I was absolutely obsessed with his unique style throughout my teenage and college years. I liked (and still like) Chrono Cross more than most, but I genuinely think it would have been at least half as fondly-remembered as Trigger if they at least imitated Akira Toriyama's style, if not hired him back for that sequel. I still miss his art style, even if I had to miss out on his most famous work (Dragon Ball) until well into adulthood.

I think I've read his cause of death turned out to be some sort of head injury, but as a self-proclaimed "hikkikomori," perhaps no one outside of his closest family would ever know exactly how and why he died.

However, it tracks with legendary mangaka dying well before their time, at best due to the insane pressures of Japan's manga and anime industries, and at worst due to freak, unforeseen tragedies (like the creators of Berserk and Yu-Gi-Oh). Remember to all take care of yourselves and take breaks when absolutely needed, it's always a tragedy when an inimitable human artist leaves us far too soon.

yo, my parents never care too much to the things i was exposed to in my childhood and teenage, here in brazil things are pretty liberal and so young we are exposed into such things like carnival, brazilian funk music (by which is different from the american funk), hot girls with big asses and tits on tv, etc, etc. My parents never care too much about the animes and cartoons i were into, at some time she didn't like the yugioh cuz it was a satan thing lol, but dragon ball, zatchbell, naruto, and such i could watch just fine. My mother also didn't like me listening to brazilian funk and rap music (by which was the thing i listened too when i was a kid, before going into metal, gangster and crime apology music), she said those music were music for criminals, at the age of 14 i started enjoying rock and metal music and she never complain about it, even liked some bands like ghost
We don't need just the money in order to have a good life, money is important, but health, relationships (not just sex and girlfriends, but family, friends, coworkers, neighbours, etc) and the spiritual side they all have to be good, those 4 things good in your life you will have a good life

@cacodayum We should remember both, but as someone who wasn't allowed to watch Dragon Ball growing up, but did experience many of his lesser-known works later in my own life, I think celebrating his life on his birthday would be a great way to experience and explore his lesser-known contributions to pop culture. Stuff like the beloved art styles of Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest (DQ is unfortunately less well-known in the West, but it is a treat when someone like me randomly stumbles upon the games somehow and realizes there's this whole series I need to experience finally). Games made more unique just by his art style, such as Tobal No. 1 and Blue Dragon. Or other manga series of his like Dr. Slump and Sand Lands. The man was known for far more than just Dragon Ball!

it's times like these that I watch the sandlot: "Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends. Heroes get remembered but legends never die, follow your heart kid, and you'll never go wrong."

@TheMiamiDeSantos Yeeeaaah, I wasn't so lucky. Besides Dragon Ball, I had to miss out on stuff like early Family Guy, The Simpsons, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Halo 3, Metal Gear Solid, obviously GTA III and San Andreas and so on, until well into my 20s. At least I did eventually get to experience most of that stuff at some point.

And yeah, you shouldn't have to work yourself to death or anything like that just to be a great artist and get paid, but unfortunately that is how it seems to have always been in Japan's manga and anime industries--and specifically those industries, the average lifespan of a mangaka is like 30-40 years shorter than the average lifespan of Japanese residents as a whole, suggesting other aspects of Japan's culture have figured out a healthy balance between work and all the more important stuff (like family relationships and spirituality), except for the manga and anime-making side. For those lucky enough to live in a society that values rest a bit more, though, definitely remember to "touch grass" in between and possibly during huge art projects of your own.

yo, princess khaoskitsune, how you doing? I have been a bit out of newgrounds, but it's cuz i'm very busy those weeks

@TheMiamiDeSantos fine. though i've been thinking about like lost media and such. i found this sweet vid about it

hm... interesting, what video?

hm... interesting indeed, reminds me a bit of a brazilian cartoon called "Fudêncio", somekind of brazilian southpark that aired on brazilian mtv back in the 2000s, there are many of it on youtube but some of it's stuff are lost media. Some people compare EOFS with Fudêncio, some brazilians even said eofs is the brazilian south park and i say "no, Fudêncio was the brazilian south park"
