I think people are more concerned about how AI is currently being marketed as a way to replace artists (despite indiscriminately stealing from artists as a base for their algorithms). Nobody complains about the AI denoiser in Blender Cycles or AI image upscaling software from Topaz because in those cases, they are just speeding up computer processes that in the past were easily the worst, most time-consuming parts of making digital art. They’re not replacing any specialized jobs—worst case scenario, they are taking away excuses to take long breaks during work hours. Like, you can no longer say “I’m going to watch a movie or 7 while I wait for Blender Cycles to render” now that rendering is getting faster and instantaneous real-time rendering is becoming more viable. The human behind the computer has to work MORE to take advantage of the extra time they now have, and are free to get more ambitious with their art even if they only do this on the weekend or as a hobby in this case.

All I ask from the developers of AI art is to back up their empty assurances that their algorithms are “just another tool for the artist.” I’ve already mentioned possible solutions to our concerns in a Newgrounds forum thread, but basically they could commission artists and properly pay to use their art in the algorithm or do what search engines like Google Images have done for years and give us the option to filter out art based on its license so we can at least tell when we can use a generated image for commercial use or for non-commercial reference. Unlike NFTs or the “Metaverse,” I can see ways that AI can be useful to me without taking away job opportunities from myself, making computer processes faster so I can spend more time on the drawing or 3D modeling that audiences actually get to see, but until I see some action to address my concerns, I am going to be greatly concerned about the technology’s potential to take all jobs and flood TV and movie theaters with “Eh, good enough” slop for mainstream audiences.
