So this is an old black powder type of revolver, where you load it by pouring black powder into each cylinder, adding the bullet and pushing it into the cylinder using a built in lever (which is what happens in this picture) and you need a fire cap for the hammer to fall on, to ignite the powder. You would also want to seal each cylinder with grease to prevent chain firing.
